Kiwanis baseball plans

preseason meeting

ADA — Anyone interested in being a coach, assistant coach or umpire for this summer’s Kiwanis Youth Baseball Leagues is invited to attend a meeting at 7 p.m. tonight at the Ada Chamber of Commerce.

“We’re going to talk about the new age cutoff (May 1) and new baseball affiliation Tuesday, and we’ll have another meeting in two weeks to firm things up,” league director Ellis Naifeh said. “We’ll send registration forms to schools in a week or 10 days, and the deadline for registration will be March 12. We won’t accept registration this year without a copy of a birth certificate.”

Leagues will be formed in four age groups — t-ball (ages 5 and 6), coach-pitch (ages 7 and 8), 10-and-under and 12-and-under — and will be open to both boys and girls. Play for all leagues through 10-and-under will begin on May 1, and 12-and-under competition will start the following week (with games to begin at 5:30 p.m. each evening) and will continue through mid-June.

“If we have enough teams, we’ll play Monday-through-Friday,” Naifeh said. “Last year, we had 45 teams.”

Naifeh said coaches are always in demand and urged those adults who are interested in taking part in the Kiwanis baseball program this summer to attend Tuesday’s meeting.

“We’re always looking for coaches,” Naifeh said. “The Kiwanis need some people to step up and be coaches.”
