Friday’s Games

At Moss Tournament

Tupelo 9, New Lima 1

NEW LIMA    010    00    —  1  4  2

TUPELO    061    02    —  9  6  2

Burkhart and Morrison. Matt Benedict and Tanner Davis. WP-Benedict (5-0). LP-Burkhart. HL-Jake Sanders 2-2, 2 RS, RBI; Brandon Maggia 1-3, 3 RBIs; Trey Roberson 1-1, 2 RBIs (T).

NOTEWORTHY: Tupelo (No. 5 in Class B) wiped out an early 1-0 New Lima lead with six runs in the bottom of the second and went on to the semifinal run-rule victory. Saturday’s championship game was postponed to Monday because of rain, but Tupelo coach Clay Weller said there was a chance his team wouldn’t play because of testing this week. Matt Benedict tossed a four-hitter Friday for his fifth straight win this spring, and Brandon Maggia’s three-run, two-out bloop single with two outs was the big blow in the second-inning outburst. Jake Sanders was 2-for-2 with an RBI single in the third, and Trey Roberson ended the game on the run rule with a two-run, walkoff single in the fifth.

COACHES QUOTE: “Once again the pitching was solid. Matt was sharp, as he has been all year. He did a good job of keeping them off balance. We missed some pitches we should hit, but you have to be pleased to win a semifinal 9-1 over a decent team.” — Tupelo head coach Clay Weller.

Team Records: Tupelo 15-5
