Defense has been a staple for the Class 4A sixth-ranked Byng Lady Pirates (25-3) this season, particularly lately.

In Byng’s three playoff games this season, the opposition has failed to reach 40 points in each contest.

“Other than the first half against Broken Bow, everything we’ve done successfully has started at the defensive end,” said Byng head coach Matt Fike.

In that regional finale, the Lady Pirates surrendered 26 first-half point, but limited the Lady Savages to just 12 in the second half, including only three in the third quarter.

The Byng defense will face a stiff challenge Friday night at 6:30 p.m. in Muskogee by taking on second-ranked and unbeaten Fort Gibson (25-0).

“Fort Gibson is obviously really good. The area final is going to be a huge challenge for us,” Fike said.
