Winners of local Hoop Shoot contests sponsored by eight Elks Lodges in the Southeast District of Oklahoma converged in Ada Saturday to decide who would advance to the state finals in Sapulpa next month. Ada Elks Lodge hosted the event. The Elks National Hoop Shoot Contest is a free-throw contest for girls and boys ages 8 to 13. In the 8-9 age bracket girl’s contest, Kayla Wright, Durant, and Lauren Trimmer, Sulphur-Davis, were tied after the mandatory 25 shots with 14 each. In the five-shot tiebreaker, Wright made four of five for the win.

In the boys division, Jordan Landon, Bristow, and Richaun Knox, McAlester, were knotted at 19. They both made four of five in the first tiebreaker. Landon finally prevailed, making four of the next five. In the 11-12 bracket, Kaylie Baxter, Durant, won easily 18-14 over Ashley Hughes, Sulphur-Davis. The boy’s contest was a much closer with Spencer Berry, Shawnee, and Cole Hughes, Durant, shooting 18. Berry beat Hughes, last year’s champion, shooting four to only three for Hughes in the tiebreaker. The 12-13 contest was the final one of the day. Brenna Burnett, Shawnee, easily took home the gold, hitting 19. Abbie Painter, McAlester, and Kortney West, Ada (Latta), tied for second with 18 each. After both made four in the first tiebreaker, Painter made four again to take second from West. The boys showed the hot hands of the day with Dylan Loman, Shawnee, was close to perfect making 23 of 25 to win. Reed Johnson, Ada (Latta), shot well with a score of 21 for second place. Of interest, both 12-13 winners representing the Shawnee Elks Lodge were from the Dale School system.
