WICHITA, Kan. — The East Central University men’s tennis team rebounded from a spring season-opening 6-1 loss to NCAA Division I Wichita State University, to defeat Newman University (Kan.), 8-1, and Barton County Community College (Kan.), 5-4 last weekend.

“It was good to get two of the three wins on the weekend and come out of Kansas with a feeling of accomplishment,” said ECU men’s assistant Brian Nelson. “We will have the upcoming week to rest up a bit and practice for next weekend where we will travel to Dallas to play four matches.”

On Friday against Wichita State, Matt Folsom picked up a win by injury default at No. 6 singles. ECU’s only doubles victory came at No. 3 as Folsom and Felipe Lopez teamed up for an 8-4 decision over WSU’s Augusto Alvarado and Rodrigo Briceno.

Also on Friday, the Tigers swept all three doubles matches and claimed five of the six singles matches against Newman. ECU’s only loss was by Josue Paz at No. 1 singles as he dropped a 6-3, 7-5 decision to the Shockers’ Chris Heck.

Claiming singles victories for the Tigers were: Quynh Tran, a 7-6, 6-3 decision over Westin Hudnall at No. 2; Chris Kriel a 6-2, 6-2 win over Zach Loomis at No. 3; Victor Rios, a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Joe Oakes at No. 4; Lopez, a 6-2, 6-2 decision over David Martin; and Folsom, a 7-5, 6-1 victor over Regis Fox at No. 5.

Tran and Paz teamed up for an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles while Kriel and Rios combined for an 8-4 decision at No. 2. Folsom and Lopez were victorious at No. 3 by an 8-2 count.

On Saturday, the Tigers edged Barton County by winning four of the six singles matches and claiming one doubles victory.

Paz earned a hard-fought 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 decision over Andres Perez at No. 1 singles while Rios, at No. 4 singles, beat Christopher Paish, 6-4, 6-4. Lopez, at No. 5 singles, won a 6-1, 6-3 match over Garret Rebel and Folsom aced Kevin Ille, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.

Folsom and Lopez teamed up for an 8-1 triumph at No. 3 doubles for the other point.

“They are always a very tough junior college program and are currently the No. 4 team in the nation,” Nelson said.

The ECU men are scheduled to play in a series of matches this weekend in Texas, facing Dallas Baptist and University of Texas-Dallas on Friday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively. The Tigers then face Western New Mexico and Nichols State on Saturday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
