EDMOND — Edmond Santa Fe High School junior, and former Ada resident, Gunnar Nixon won the boys pentathlon at the 2010 Arcadia Invitational April 8-9 in Arcadia, California, but was not easy.

Nixon had stiff competition from Kevin Lazas of Brentwood, Tenn., as the Oklahoma athlete scored 7,573 points to Lazas’ 7,510 points.

It was the second-best decathlon score in national history.

Nixon won two of the five pentathlon events — the 110-meter hurdles (14.63 seconds) and the javelin (181 feet, 10 inches — a personal best).

The Edmond Santa Fe Wolf athlete was runner-up in the other three events. He was second in the discus (124 feet, 10 inches), the pole vault (13 feet, 6 inches — a personal best) and the 1,500-meter run (4:35.9).

Last month, Nixon won the boys pentathlon at the Nike Indoor Nationals at Boston’s Reggie Lewis Center.
