East Central University defensive end Armonty Bryant and cornerback Dontae Smith have each nabbed another award.
Bryant and Smith were named to the Don Hansen All-Super Region 4 Third Team, it was announced Wednesday by the Don Hansen Football Committee.
The Don Hansen teams carry out the legacy of longtime small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at the age of 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988. Don Hansen’s Football Gazette began selecting NCAA Division II All-Region squads in 2003.
Bryant, a 6-foot, 6-inch, 245-pound sophomore from Wichita Falls, Texas, adds this award to a laundry list of honors he has already achieved. He was recently named to the Daktronics, Inc. All-American Second Team after being named to the Daktronics All-Super Region 4 First Team just a few weeks prior to that.
Bryant, who was third in the nation in total sacks at 13.5 and tied for ninth in tackles for loss with 19, was named Lone Star Conference North Defensive Lineman of the Year as well as being named to the All-LSC North First Team on defense. During the course of the 2010 season, he picked up two LSC North Defensive Player of the Week awards and one Special Teams Player of the Week honor.
He also was named to the All-LSC Scoop Football Team.
Bryant not only led the conference in sacks, but had a 65-yard interception return for a touchdown, a seven-yard fumble recovery and return for a score, two forced fumbles, two pass breakups, four quarterback hurries and four blocked kicks.
Smith, a 6-1, 180 junior out of Deland, Fla., also adds to his significant list of awards, including Daktronics First Team All-Super Region 4 and First Team All-LSC North as a defensive back. Smith also garnered two All-LSC North Defensive Player of the Week honors in 2010.
He was also picked for the All-LSC Scoop Team while leading the conference with six interceptions and was tied with 10 others for 11th place in that category in NCAA Division II. Smith returned two of his pickoffs for touchdowns in 2010 as he ranked on the ECU squad in total tackles with 57 (42 solo) with five stops for lost yards, six pass breakups and a fumble recovery.
The Don Hansen All-American Teams will be announced in January, but Bryant and Smith will not be among the candidates. Only the first and second team award winners are up for those honors.
