Incarnate Word sweeps ECU baseball squad

ADA — Incarnate Word received a pair of solid pitching performances as the Cardinals rolled to an 8-2, 8-1 Lone Star Conference baseball doubleheader sweep of host East Central University Friday at Tiger Field.

UIW got a seven-inning, complete-game four-hitter out of left-hander Kirk Jewasko (10-1) to take the opener as he allowed just one walk and struck out 12.

Four Cardinal hurlers combined for an eight-hitter in the nightcap as ECU’s lone run was unearned.

The Tigers fell to 9-33 overall and 5-27 in the LSC with the losses while UIW improved to 30-12 and 21-8. Coach Dino Rosato saw his Tigers drop their 12th and 13th straight games.

Game 1

Incarnate Word 8, ECU 2

Tiger designated hitter and leadoff man Justin Gibson collected three of his team’s four hits as he went 3-for-3 with a triple and RBI double in the third inning, scoring J.T. Gasso, who led off the inning by drawing a walk.

ECU’s other tally came off Tyle Hankins’ single which scored Gibson in the sixth.

The Cardinals broke a 1-all tie with a four-run fourth inning before adding a single run in the sixth and scoring twice more in the seventh.

Leroy Urbina hit a solo-homer in the sixth and Mike De La Rosa added a two-run shot in the seventh. Urbina had an RBI double in the fourth as he was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a pair of scored runs. Derrick Walls, who was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, also had a two-run triple in the fourth.

Tiger starter Hernan Vivas (0-2) was charged with the loss after allowing six earned runs off nine hits with one walk. Julio Davila pitched the seventh and allowed the two earned runs off three hits.

Game 2

Incarnate Word 8, ECU 1

The Tigers left 10 runners on base as the Cardinals did all of their damage in three innings — two runs in the second, three in the third and three in the fifth.

ECU’s offense (eight hits) came from just four players as Ethan Gold was 3-for-3 while Grant Rainwater (2-for-4 with a run scored) and Dylan Mascarenas (2-for-4 with one RBI) also had multiple hits.

Mascarenas’ run-scoring single plated Rainwater from second base in the eighth inning after Rainwater got on base off a fielding error and moved up to second off a balk to lead off the bottom half of that frame.

Jackson Woodruff slammed a two-run homer in the fifth for UIW. Matt Roohan and De La Rosa each went 2-for-4. Roohan drove in two runs and scored once while De La Rosa knocked in one run and scored twice.

Tiger starter Rick Hepworth (0-4) was tagged with the loss after lasting 2.2 innings. Donny Williams, Will Grimes and Jeremy Custer saw mound duty. Williams allowed no hits and no walks while striking out one in 1.1 innings while Custer gave up just four hits and one walk while fanning four in the final four innings.

Cardinal starter Jorge Guarneros (8-1) got the win in going six complete innings and allowing six hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. UIW had three different hurlers go the final three frames.

ECU closes out the season with a three-game series at Texas A&M-Kingsville next weekend.
