Dale sweeps past Vanoss

DALE – Claire Chastain fired in a game-leading 28 points, including three 3-pointers, as the Class 2A third-ranked Dale Lady Pirates knocked off the ninth-ranked Vanoss Lady Wolves 70-48 Tuesday night.

Dale, 20-3 on the season, sank 11-of-13 free shots in the contest, jumped out to an 18-10 lead after one quarter and took a 31-17 advantage into the halftime locker room. The Lady Pirates then outscored Vanoss by a 39-26 margin in the second half, including 23-15 in the third period.

“Dale shot lights out and just completely out-physical’d us. We did some good things. We will learn from it and regroup,” said Vanoss head coach Jonathon Hurt.

Lizzy Simpson topped the Lady Wolves with 15 points as she drained 7-of-9 free free throws. Emrie Ellis followed with 11 points and was 5-of-6 from the charity stripe, as Vanoss was 12-of-15 from the line for the game.

Rileigh Rush chipped in nine points off three treys in a losing effort.

The Lady Wolves, who fell to 19-5 on the year, played without Laramie Doffin, who was sidelined due to sickness.

Rylee Thompson also scored in double figures for Dale with 16, as she connected on three 3-point buckets. Jacie McClure also sank three treys in finishing with nine points for the winners.

“When we play with that kind of execution on both ends of the floor, we can play with anybody,” Dale head coach Josh Forsythe said.


Dale 51, Vanoss 49

Logan Woodruff tossed in 18 points and Gabe Gouge added 16 as the host and 20th-ranked Pirates escaped with the two-point victory.

The Wolves, who dropped to 13-10, received 17 points from Sando Hill and 12 from Kyler Byrd, who canned four 3-pointers in the contest. Hill converted three treys on the night.

Dale, which improved to 13-10, was 10-of-14 from the line for the game while Vanoss was 4-of-6.

The Wolves built a 15-9 lead through one quarter, but they were forced to settle for a 24-23 halftime edge after the Pirates went on a 14-9 run in the second. A 12-9 third period put Dale on top at 35-33 heading into the fourth.

A layup by Trae Thompson on an assist by Dallen Forsythe gave Dale a 47-45 lead with 38 seconds left in the game, and two free shots by Woodruff extended the lead to 49-45 with 24.2 to play.

The Pirates won their seventh straight game to improve to 13-10.

Both Vanoss teams entertain Allen on Friday for home games at East Central University’s Kerr Activities Center, with regular-season Pontotoc Conference Tournament championships on the line.
