Cami Correa hit a two-out, three-run homer in the top of the seventh as East Central University knocked off host Northeastern State 6-3 Friday in the first game of a Lone Star Conference North Division softball contest at RiverHawks Park.
With the two teams deadlocked at 3-all and two outs, the rally began when Emily Kennemer doubled to left-center. Catie Tolliver came in to pinch-run for Kennemer before Desiree’ Nordie drew a walk. Laura Loughmiller entered to pinch-run for Nordie.
Correa then came up to the plate and homered to right-center with what proved to be the game-winning blast. It was her fifth home run of the season.
ECU took a 1-0 lead when Desiree’ Nordie homered to left to lead off the second inning. It was Nordie’s second homer of the year. The Lady Tigers upped the count to 2-0 in the third with a pair of hits and the help of an error as Correa singled to left, scoring Nicole Sanchez. Sanchez led off the third with a single through the left side of the infield.
In the fourth, ECU made it 3-0 with another unearned score as Whitney Harris, who drew a walk earlier in the frame scored off an error.
NSU scored two in the bottom of the fourth and added one more in the sixth to tie it up at 3-3.
Wanda Malone (16-5) pitched all seven innings for the win as she allowed just one earned run off four hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
Correa went 2-for-3 with the four runs batted in and one run scored as the Lady Tigers finished with six hits.
Four the six ECU runs were earned.
The Lady Tigers, who improved to 28-11 on the season and 5-5 in the LSC North, and RiverHawks will battle again on Saturday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader to conclude the three-game series. NSU enters Saturday’s twin bill at 15-23 and 3-7.
