Thursday's Games

At Latta

First Round

Wynnewood 7, Latta 2

WYNNEWOOD 400 030 0 — 7 5 0

LATTA 200 000 0 — 2 6 4

Betts and Willis. Jay Husband, Dalton Brown (1), Steven Reed (6) and Taylor Whitis. WP-Betts. LP-Husband (2-5). HR-Husband (L). HL-Betts 2-3 (W), Husband 1-3, RS, 2 RBIs (L).

NOTEWORTHY: Three Latta errors led to four Wynnewood runs in the first inning, and the Savages went on the upset Class 2A’s No. 3 team. Losing pitcher Jay Husband cracked a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to 4-2, but the Panthers left runners in scoring position in four of the five innings and couldn’t get closer.

COACHES QUOTE: “We broke down fundamentally the whole game. They have a pretty good team, but we made three huge errors in the first inning, and they were on plays that we run every day. We had chances, but we set the tone by committing errors in the first inning. That gave Wynnewood a spark.” — Latta coach Eddie Collins.

Loser’s Bracket

Latta 11, Dibble 0

LATTA 001 014 5 — 11 11 0

DIBBLE 000 000 0 — 0 2 3

Kolbie Brown, Steven Reed (6) and Taylor Whitis. Perry, Perry (6) and Thorne. WP-Brown (7-3). LP-Perry. HR-K. Brown (L). 2B-Husband 3, Whitis (L). HL-Jay Husband 4-5, RS, 2 RBIs; Brown 3-4, RS, 2 RBIs; Whitis 1-4, 2 RBIs (L).

NOTEWORTHY: Latta ace Kolbie Brown struck out nine in five innings and combined with Jay Husband for seven hits, two runs and three RBIs as Latta scored nine runs in the final two innings to rout Dibble in an elimination contest. Husband, who had four hits (including three doubles), doubled and scored in the fifth, doubled home a run in the Latta’s four-run sixth and added a two-run double to highlight Latta’s five-run seventh. Brown had three hits, including a two-run homer in the seventh.

COACHES QUOTE: “Kolbie only threw 65 pitches, so if we get in a bind, I might close with him an inning or two today, depending on how he feels. Our goal is just to stay alive, but we have to play better than we did yesterday. The kids know that,” — Latta coach Eddie Collins.

Today’s Schedule: Amber-Pocasset vs. Wynnewood, 2 p.m.; Latta vs. Loser Game 1, 4 p.m.; Championship, 6 p.m. (An if-necessary contest would be played Saturday at 1 p.m., weather permitting).

Other Scores: Amber-Pocasset 11, Dibble 1.
