Byng and Roff needed a total of just three innings to cruise into today's semifinals at the Byng Fall Baseball Tournament. But the upstart Stonewall Longhorns threw a huge scare into the unbeaten Asher Indians in Thursday's tournament opener.
Stonewall (2-4) never led but refused to go away in a 6-5 loss to an Asher squad that reached the Class B championship game in the spring and is on the short list of contenders again this fall. While the Indians advanced to meet Roff — which run-ruled New Lima, 12-0, in three innings — in a 4 p.m. semifinal, host Byng got a pass to the second round when Fort Towson didn't show up and forfeited its opener. The 6-1 Pirates will take on the winner of Thursday's nightcap between Wright City and Ripley at 6:30.
