Latta's Kessinger wins Southwest Hoop Shoot title
DALLAS — Latta sharpshooter and state champion Carter Kessinger, representing the Ada Elks Lodge, won the 2011 Southwest Regional Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest held in Dallas March 26.
Kessinger won the 12-13 year old boys division by sinking 23 free throws out of 25 attempts. His 23 makes tied him with the highest total in regulation competition.
The Latta youngster now advances to the national finals in Springfield, Ma., on April 20-29. There Kessinger will compete against 11 other regional champions for the national title, and to have his name inscribed on the Elks trophy in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
To earn a spot in the regional competition, Kessinger won his local contest and then the Southeast District Shoot-off. He earned the Oklahoma state title at the Oklahoma State Elks Association championship.
This year over 340,000 kids in the Southwest Region — which includes Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas — are expected to have competed in the contest, according to Jud Good, Southwest Regional Director of the Elks Hoop Shoot program. Nationwide, over 3.4 million boys and girls will compete in three different age groups.
“It’s an honor to be able to give kids like these a platform to excel. The Elks are all about helping the youth of America, and this program gives them a chance to shine.
Makrya Tramble from the Shawnee Elks Lodge also won her contest in the 8-9 year old age group and will be joining Kessinger in the national competition.
Fans can send good luck messages to these two athletes at www.elks.org/hoopshoot/greetings.cfm until April 15. Fans can also follow the action at the nationals shot by shot by logging on to www.elks.org and clicking on the Hoop Shoot tab at the bottom of the page during the competition.
