Allen drops pair of regional tuneup games

Allen shortstop Sunzie Harrison makes a throw from the ground during action earlier this spring. The Lady Mustangs dropped a pair of games to the host Lady Hornets and Varnum Tuesday at the Stuart Festival.

STUART — The Allen Lady Mustangs, in gearing up for regional play, dropped a 10-2 decision to Stuart and a 12-2 contest to Varnum Tuesday in softball action at the Stuart Festival.

Allen (No. 15 in Class 3A), with the two setbacks, fell to 17-19 on the season. Stuart (No. 7 in Class 2A) improved to 28-10, while Varnum (No. 9 in Class A) is now 19-9.

Allen meets Warner at 2:15 p.m. Thursday in the first round of a Class 3A Regional Tournament at Tushka.

Game 1

Stuart 10, Allen 2

The Lady Mustangs were limited to five hits, as Stuart compiled 10 for the game.

Katey Read went 2-for-2 and scored a run for Allen and also took the pitching loss.

The only other hits for the Lady Mustangs came from Taylor Tollett (1-for-1), Riley Koonce (1-for-2 with a run scored) and Maddy Clifford (1-for-2).

Leading 2-0, Stuart broke the contest open with a five-run third inning and added three more scores in the bottom of the fourth after the Lady Mustangs tallied their only two in the top of the fourth.

Sienna Hooser finished 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored for the Lady Hornets, while Emma Crawford went 1-for-1 with a double and three RBIs.

Game 2

Varnum 12, Allen 2

Clifford and Koonce drove in the only runs of the game for the Lady Mustangs.

Clifford was 1-for-1 with the one RBI and a walk, while Koonce finished 1-for-2 with the other RBI.

Kinsey Nix had the only other hit – a triple – in going 1-for-2 with a run scored for Allen.

Varnum pounded out 17 hits, including a grand slam, to go with two doubles and a triple.

Christian Wind finished 4-for-4 with four runs scored for Varnum, while Savannah Deatherage went 3-for-4 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored. Nakai Harjo finished 2-for-3 with a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored for the Lady Whippets.
