It’s official. James “Give Me My Due” Myers is the 2007 Ada Evening News Football Prediction Race champ.

After squandering a huge lead, J.M. ran away and hid from the field in the final two weeks of the season with back-to-back 8-2 weeks. The champ’s 8-game win left a sour taste in the mouths of the rest of us slugs.

Meanwhile, Leo Kelley began leaking oil and crawled home with ugly 5-5 marks in Weeks 14 and 15. Surely, this proves the old fella’s skills have eroded. Why didn’t he retire as a champion? Why? Because he’s a Kelley.

Sports Editor Jeff Cali (who is in the middle of his eighth vacation of the year) made a run at the end and — thanks to Jackson State’s upset of Grambling — snared third place. The Big Guy will be dangerous if he ever finds a way to get out of the blocks early.

Our illustrious guests were consistent week after week, ending up with a solid fourth-place finish.

The Beasley Boys were a Grambling win away from sending Jeff down to the second division. On the bright side, recently compiled data on the annual AEN College Football Bowl Challenge showed the Dynamic Duo has the best overall won-loss record since 2000. That’s impressive.

The going got tough for the stiffs at the bottom of the prediction pile.

“Bullet Bob” Forrest pulled out his bag of tricks and escaped the cellar with a remarkable late-season run. Bob finished up at 85-65, five games ahead of the unlucky Roy Deering.

Roy Bob, the AEN Prediction mascot and intelligent baboon, would have finished second, but he was disqualified when he turned in a ballot smeared with banana. That is definitely against the prediction rules (Sec. 4, Art. 35J of the AEN Prediction bylaws).

“I plan to file a formal protest to the commissioner,” Roy Bob told me through sign language (Note: I was unable to interpret some of his gestures, but I’m pretty sure one of them involved a foot being placed somewhere that would hurt.)

Roy Bob, take it from me, protests to our commissioner are never upheld.

Hopefully, the prediction emergency fund had enough to send that touchy baboon to anger management training.

Well, another season has come and gone. Same time, same station next September. Have a great New Year.
