McAlester 22, Ada 16
McAlester scored early and late to win a see-saw battle with the Cougar ninth-graders, despite 139 yards rushing and two touchdowns from tailback Tyler Mills.
After McAlester took an 8-0 halftime lead, Ada’s Preston Dye blocked a punt through the end zone for a safety to make it 8-2 early in the third quarter. Another McAlester touchdown and two-point conversion put the Buffaloes up 16-2 before Mills’ first touchdown run (a 10-yarder) cut the lead to 16-10 heading to the fourth quarter. McAlester scored on a short run in the fourth to again go up by 12 points, then Mills scored a late touchdown from four yards out and Ada was unsuccessful on an attempted on-side kick and the Buffaloes ran out the clock.
Quarterback Qumain Black had 97 yards on 12 carries, and Jesse Cashman added 44 yards on just three trips as Ada (2-3) rolled up 291 yards and ran 44 plays in the loss. Kolton Howry led the Cougar defense with a fumble recovery.
Ada 12, McAlester 0
Diontee Albert returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown, and Ada won a defensive struggle despite gaining just 91 yards.
Albert’s punt return gave Ada a 6-0 halftime lead, then Dillon Bolin went 15 yards on a quarterback sneak in the third quarter for an insurance touchdown. The Cougars (3-2) ran just 22 plays and averaged just over four yards a snap, but the defense — led by Cole Higbee, Brady Bowers, Jordon Morris and Desmond Ferguson — limited McAlester to just 26 total years.
McAlester 14, Ada 8
Ada (2-3) grabbed an 8-0 halftime lead on a safety and a 37-yard run by Staley Easly, but McAlester used two big plays to score 14 third-quarter points and steal the win.
Easley finished with 194 of Ada’s 208 total yards on 22 carries, and the Cougar defense played well overall, despite giving up a 43-yard pass and a 30-yard run for touchdowns in the third period. Chase Bowker led the way on defense with a fumble recovery.
Ada returns to action Thursday, hosting Tecumseh.
