LAWTON — Led by senior Jake Robbins’ three-round score of 229, the Ada Cougars finished ninth at the Class 5A State golf tournament held earlier this week at the Lawton Country Club.

Robbins fired a 76-74 during his first two rounds before finishing with a 79.

“Jake was our only senior and he did a great job for us,” said Ada head coach Mark Kedy.

The Cougars three-round total of 321-323-326—970 was good enough for an eight-stroke bulge over Shawnee (978) and left them just seven behind Carl Albert (963).

Ardmore won the state title with an 883 while Duncan followed at 887 and Bixby was third at 905.

“That was a very successful tournament for us. We showed a tremendous amount of improvement this spring,” Kedy said.

Sophomore Tommy Sovereign fired a 238 for the Cougars while freshman Alex Long followed with a 251, including carding a 79 in his final round. Rounding out Ada’s totals were a 256 by freshman Chris Sweeney and a 265 by sophmore Kris Lowry.

“This was very good experience for our two sophomores and two freshmen. And those four players will provide a very strong nucleus for the future,” Kedy said.

Bixby’s Draegon Majors edged Ardmore’s Ryan Smith for the individual medalist crown. Majors finished with a three-round total of 70-66-72—208 while Smith was a stroke back at 73-66-70—209.
