upends Dallas Baptist, 5-3

 ARLINGTON, Texas — The East Central University women’s tennis team set the tone early by winning two of three doubles matches and came away with a 5-3 dual victory over Dallas Baptist Thursday.

Julia Arguello and Marta Valles teamed up for a 9-7 decision at No. 1 doubles while Nilsa Ramirez and Kristen Clubb combined for a 9-8 (8-6) win at No. 2 doubles.

All three of ECU’s singles wins came in straight sets as Arguello rolled to a 6-4, 6-1 triumph at No. 1. Ramirez earned a 6-3, 7-6 (11-9) decision at No. 4 and Clubb was a 6-4, 6-4 victor at No. 6.

At No. 2 singles, Valles was leading her match 6-7, 6-3, 3-2, but it was not completed.

ECU improved to 4-8 on the season and 1-7 against NCAA Division II competition.

 ARLINGTON, Texas — The East Central University men’s tennis squad swept the No. 1 through No. 4 singles matches in straight sets while claiming of the three doubles as the Tigers rolled to a 6-3 dual victory over Dallas Baptist Thursday in non-conference play.

ECU’s doubles wins came at No. 1 as Andres Nunez and Dai Edwardes-Evans combined for an 8-4 triumph while Carlos Muro and Mitch Sholty teamed up for an 8-2 decision at No. 3.

In singles play, Nunez won his match by a 6-2, 6-4 count at No. 1. Stefan Stein picked up a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 2 and Samuel Moore was a 6-3, 6-4 winner at No. 3 and Muro earned a 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 4.

The Tigers’ two singles losses by Sholty at No. 5 and Ignacio Lecero at No. 6 were extended to tiebreakers.

ECU improved to 6-5 on the season and 4-5 against Division II foes.

Men's Tennis Player of the Week

 ADA — East Central University junior Andres Nunez was named Lone Star Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week on Thursday after going 4-1 in singles play and 5-0 in doubles competition for the Tigers.

Nunez, competing at No. 1 singles for ECU, won in straight-set matches against McMurry College (6-2, 6-1), College of the Southwest (6-0, 6-1), Southeastern Oklahoma State (6-2, 6-2) and Midwestern State (6-2, 6-4) while losing a three-set decision to Abilene Christian (2-6, 6-2, 4-6).

Nunez, from Santiago Chile, teamed with Dai Edwardes-Evans to go 5-0 during that span at No. 1 doubles for the Tigers, including an 8-2 conference decision over Southeastern Oklahoma on Tuesday and an 8-5 LSC win over Midwestern State on Wednesday.
