For the second time in less than a year, Pontotoc County’s volunteer fire departments sought public approval of a sales tax to find their operations.
And this time, the departments were on track to win.
Early returns Tuesday showed that voters were backing a proposal to adopt the sales tax. Unofficial results showed that 6,565 voters backed the proposal, while 5,474 voted against it for a difference of 1,091 votes.
Twenty of the county’s 21 precincts had reported results as of press time.
Outgoing Pontotoc County Commissioner Danny Davis, a supporter of the sales tax, said he was pleased with the preliminary results.
