MUSKOGEE, Okla. — Muskogee’s first-ever Mistletoe Market is scheduled for Thursday, featuring more than 30 vendors offering a variety of holiday and other items, including many one-of-a-kind crafts.
The event is hosted by the Greater Muskogee Area Chamber of Commerce as part of its season-long “My Muskogee Christmas” program, said Angela Wilson, chamber vice president.
The event will be held at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. Tickets are $3 in advance or $5 at the door. The ticket provides access to all of the vendors, refreshments for purchase and a chance to win cash prizes, she said.
“The indoor market will be filled with local vendors offering a variety of quality gifts for everyone on your shopping list,” Wilson said.
The Market’s location places it across the street from Arrowhead Mall and the ice skating rink, and it will be held the same day as the Katy District’s Sip’n Shop Thursday, all to help promote shopping in downtown Muskogee, she said.
“We want to encourage people to shop in Muskogee and emphasize how many great retailers, products and other shopping opportunities there are right here locally,” Wilson said. “It is a good opportunity for entrepreneurs without an actual brick and mortar store to promote their products locally.”
D.J. Thompson, chamber president and chief executive officer, said organizers see the event as a way to promote Muskogee businesses and support the local economy.
“City sales tax revenue has been hit hard by the dramatic increase in internet shopping over the past several years,” Thompson said. “Providing local, unique experiences for shoppers — experiences not found on the internet — is the best way to help bring them out to shop in a store instead of from their computer.”
She said having the chamber host the event also is a way to educate residents about the economic importance of shopping local and the impact it has on our city services and workforce.
