ARLINGTON, Va. — Services for Ed C. Haley Jr., JOCM USN (retired), 80, were held Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010, at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
Mr. Haley died Aug. 21, 2010, at his home in Lehigh Acres, Fla. He was born Jan. 12, 1930, at Ada to Ed. C. Haley Sr. and Eva Vincent Haley.
He attended Ada City Schools and graduated in 1948 as valedictorian. He enlisted in the Navy in 1949 and served 22 years before retiring in 1978. Mr. Haley received numerous awards, including the Vietnam Service Medal. As master chief journalist, he was involved in news writing, speech writing, radio and television broadcasting.
Mr. Haley married Josefina "Josie" Dones in New York City in 1959. He received a BA degree from New York University and an MBA from the University of Arizona.
After retiring from the Navy, he began a second career in government as an administrative officer in the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, Department of Education, while living in Dale City, Va. Since 1991, Mr. Haley lived in Lehigh Acres, Fla., where he wrote science fiction and learned new languages.
Survivors include his sister, Joyce Jared; daughter Yvonne Eberling; grandchildren Christine Hoffman, Cecil Conley III, and Melissa Taylor; two nephews, Jeff Jared and Joe Ed Jared; and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Haley was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Josie, daughter Yvette Haley, and nephew Steve Jared.
