Charlie “Vern” Cathey

Ada —

Charlie “Vern” Cathey, age 78, an Ada resident.

He was born Friday, Nov. 23, 1934, to Charlie and Minnie Iva (Evans) Cathey at Boggy Depot.

Vern passed away on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at Ada. 

He graduated from Tushka High School. Most of his life he worked as a long-haul truck driver.

He hauled hay in his early years along with owning a gas station and a recreation center with a grill. He sold oil products, sold and installed satellite systems and had an auto repair shop. He owned two tire shops, worked as a cowboy and was foreman of a farm/ranch. He also was a moonshiner for a short time many, many years ago.

In 1958, Vern received Jesus into his life and was baptized in a stock pond at Wilson. Later in life, on June 3, 2003, he was baptized into the Jehovah Witness faith.

Vern is survived by his wife, Rita, of the home in Ada; children Bobby Joe Cathey and wife, Kerrie, of Fort Worth, Texas, Charles Wayne Cathey and wife, Beverly, of Alva, Gary Don Cathey and wife, Laurie, of Yukon, Ricky Allen Cathey of Latta, Barbara Ann Johnson of Wilburton, David Higdon of Kansas, Darryl Higdon and wife, Nema, of Ada, Ronnie McCartney and wife, Laurie, of Ada, Tammy Hoppe of Ada; siblings, Earl Ray Cathey and wife Janie, of Idabel, Glen Anderson Cathey and wife, Naomi, of Ada, Mettie Hawkins Croy and husband, John, of Duncan; 20 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and cousins.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Minnie Iva (Evans) Cathey; children, Shelba Jean Cathey and Tommie Lavern Cathey; siblings, Gene Harlan Cathey, Ewen Hugh Cathey and Colleen Kay (Kate) Cathey; nephew, Jackie Dean Cathey; granddaughter, LaTisha Marie Hoppe.

Service will be Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the Boggy Depot Cemetery.
