Wayne Dale Cope

Services for Wayne Dale Cope, 78, Fitzhugh, are 2 p.m. Thursday at Ada First Baptist Church, the Rev. Steve Wilburn officiating. Burial follows at Rosedale Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Criswell Funeral Home.

Mr. Cope died Monday, June 10, 2013, at his home. He was born Nov. 5, 1934, in Ada to William “Bill” and Helen Loman Cope.

He graduated from Ada High School and received a bachelor’s and master’s degree from East Central University in Ada where he was a member of the East Central Tigers basketball team.

Mr. Cope moved to Ignacio, Colo., in 1958 and taught high school history and coached basketball and baseball. He moved back to this area in 1971.

He married Brenda Mitchusson on June 4, 1980, in Roff. Mr. Cope coached baseball and basketball and was also the high school principal at Roff until his retirement. He was affiliated with Fitzhugh Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Cope, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Terry Lefler, Fitzhugh, and Sheri and Roy Haney, Ada; a son and daughter-in-law, William “Wid” and Jenny Cope, Kingston; a stepdaughter, Robyn McCoy,  and her husband Chris of Fitzhugh; his grandchildren, Brandon Lefler and his wife Myka, Wes Haney, Shawna Williams and her husband Bubba, Rachel Cope, Tara Lefler, Dylan Cope and his wife Callie, Chelsey Cope, Taylor McCoy, Ty McCoy, and Taycee McCoy; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by parents.

Bearers will be Tony Wellington, Bill Duty, Steve Burrows, James Cornell, Randy Stephens and Marvin Barbee. Honorary bearers will be Thurman Stephens, Richard Webb, Paul Allen (posthumously), and Aaron Weast.
