ADA — An Ada woman was sentenced Thursday to serve time in prison for committing lewd acts with children and child abuse.
Mary Elizabeth Russell, 30, was sentenced to 25 years for each of three counts of lewd acts with a child under the age of 16, 25 years for sexual abuse of a child, and 25 years for each of two counts of child abuse by injury.
Russell was charged with lewd acts and sexual abuse in 2010 after three victims came forward. The victims told authorities Russell forced them to touch her in a sexual manner.
Russell received the child abuse charges after two incidents that occurred in 2010. In March 2010, Russell was suspected of causing a spiral fracture in the arm of a child in her care. Russell told investigators the child was standing on a chair to reach some DVDs when the child fell. Doctors said the fracture could have been caused in a fall and charges were not pursued.
In September 2010, Russell was investigated after bruises were discovered on the same child. Photos of the child’s injuries were inspected by Ada Police Detective Shane Jones.
“(I) observed (the victim) had bruises over much of her body, arms and legs, head on both sides, neck and back,” Jones said in a court affidavit. “On (the victim’s) back was what appeared to be an open looped bruise, possibly caused by a strap of some type.”
Russell pleaded no-contest to all charges in May 2011. Assistant District Attorney Jim Tillison said Russell must serve 85 percent of 25 years before she is eligible for parole.
