A woman who allegedly drove a car over her boyfriend and killed him was charged with murder Friday.
Assistant District Attorney Jim Tillison filed an affidavit to charge Jasmine Hope Cotter, 18, Jones, with second-degree murder. Authorities believe Cotter ran over 21-year-old Damian Ruston of Ada on State Highway 1 six miles east of Ada in October 2010. According to the affidavit, prosecutors believe Cotter intended to harm Ruston but not kill him.
If the matter goes to trial, jurors will be able to consider a charge of first-degree manslaughter instead of second-degree murder.
Cotter is being held in Pontotoc County Justice Center without bail. Emergency officials responded to the scene at 12:13 a.m. Oct. 26. Ruston was rushed to Valley View Regional Hospital in Ada, then taken by medical helicopter to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City to be treated for what OHP Trooper Brian Bagwell said were “critical head and internal injuries.”
Ruston died at 12:03 a.m. Oct. 27. Authorities believe Cotter and Ruston were having an argument on the side of the road when the alleged crime was committed.
