An Ada woman was arrested Thursday during a traffic stop after authorities discovered she allegedly had more than half a pound of methamphetamine in her car with children also in the vehicle.
Candice Renae Cowan, 31, of Ada was arrested on suspicion of trafficking methamphetamine, two counts of child endangerment and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The traffic stop was conducted at 5 p.m. by Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Wil Hayden near the intersection of U.S. 377 and County Road 1705. Hayden said he was on routine patrol on U.S. 377 when he observed a vehicle not maintaining its lane.
“I observed the vehicle failing to maintain its lane by driving on the fog line for three to four seconds as it passed (me),” Hayden said in a probable cause affidavit.
He spoke with the driver, Cowan, who also had two children under the age of 10 in the vehicle with her.
Hayden said Cowan appeared to be nervous and changed her story when asked about her travels.
“Cowan was asked where she was coming from, and (she) stated, ‘from Ada,’” Hayden said. “Ada was the direction in which she was headed, not coming from. Cowan then changed her story to her departing from a friend’s grandpa’s house and headed to Ada.”
Hayden said Cowan would not make eye contact with him.
“When asked if there was anything illegal in the car, I observed Cowan to be more nervous than before,” Hayden said.
Chickasaw Lighthorse Police Officer Curtis Kennedy and his K9 partner responded to assist.
“Kennedy reported to me that his K9 gave a positive alert to the passenger side door,” Hayden said. “I found eight baggies containing a white crystal substance stuffed into two different USB wall charger packages inside of her purse. Another plastic bag with white crystal substance were found in Cowan’s wallet, which was inside of her purse. The purse was in the middle seat. All the bags of crystal substances were later weighed at 246 grams/8.7 ounces. Five cell phones in the car was found and seized.”
The children were placed in the care of a relative. According to court records, Cowan was charged Friday with felony trafficking in illegal drugs.
