VANOSS — “Shelter from the Storm” was the theme of the 2006 Employment Law Workshop attended by Jack Williamson, David Golden, Harold Haines and Melvin Ohlsen, members of the Vanoss Board of Education. Sponsored by the Oklahoma State School Boards Association Tuesday, Jan 24, at Metro Tech Springlake Campus, the workshop focused on smart employment strategies school leaders could use to protect their districts. They were accompanied by Cheryl Melton, superintendent and Kathy Wellington, principal.

Employment experts joined OSSBA attorneys to provide timely information for the audience of school board members, school administrations, attorneys and other interested parties. OSSBA attorneys Julie Miller and Craig Crimmins discussed possible liability issues for inappropriate use of school property while OSSBA attorneys warned “don’t go there” concerning workplace sexual harassment, the rights of employees with disabilities and retaliation issues. Laura Holmes of the Center for Education Law covered Family Medical Leave. Mark Meyers of the Safe Schools Project demonstrated how the effective use of background checks can help keep schools from making wrong employment decisions. The final sessions featured John Moyer of Rosenstein, Fist and Ringold focusing on termination decisions and Louis Barlow Education Management Services explained the scope of bargaining.

“Using smart employment strategies prevents trouble down the road for school leaders,” said Dr. Keith Ballard, OSSBA Executive Director. “A proactive approach helps ensure everyone is safe and can focus on the mission of educating Oklahoma’s students.”
