STRATFORD — A 20-year-old Stratford man was killed early Thursday morning in a highway collision involving a tractor trailer.

Cody L. Smith was pronounced dead upon arrival at Valley View Regional Hospital after the pickup truck he was driving impacted a semi and lodged under the truck's rear duals, according to the reports of Highway Patrol Trooper Jay Clary.

Reports said at approximately 5:30 a.m. Smith was driving a 2000 Chevrolet pickup northbound on U.S. 177, two miles north of Stratford and crossed left of center. Smith’s vehicle struck a 1995 Kenworth tractor trailer driven by 32-year-old James C. England, Seminole. Reports indicate Smith may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Reports said, once struck, England's semi ran off of the roadway and flipped, pinning him in the cab for more than an hour. Ada and Stratford Fire Departments cut England from the wreckage using the "jaws of life" and he was transported by Pauls Valley Air-Evac Lifeteam to Norman Regional Hospital. England was treated and released.

Assisting Clary at the scene were troopers Shelby Humphrey, Mike Manning, Brian McGill, Doug George, and 2nd Lt. Don Westbrook. Also assisting were the Ada and Stratford Fire Departments, Garvin County Sheriff's Office, Stratford Police Department, and Valley View EMS.
