STRATFORD — Monday night, March 6, a fatality collision occurred one mile north of State Highway 19 on US 177 in Garvin County. Freddie Weldon Ward, 59, Stratford, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Oklahoma Highway Patrol report.

According to Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Kevin Crawford, Ward, traveling north on US177 in a 2000 chevy pickup, was slowing down to turn into a private drive when another vehicle, a 2005 Chevy Avalanche driven by Mark Wayne Hampton, 35, Denton, Texas, also northbound, ran upon the back of a flatbed trailer Ward was pulling. Hampton’s vehicle then went airborne, striking the top of Ward’s vehicle, taking the cab off the pickup. Ward was ejected and died from massive head injuries. Hampton was not injured.

Hampton was reportedly driving under the influence, contributing to the cause of the collision, and was transported to the Garvin County jail by Trooper Tracey Laxton or Murray County. Seatbelts were reportedly in use by Hampton, but it is unknown if Ward was using his.

Ward was taken to the Pickard Funeral Home in Stratford.

Officer Crawford was assisted by Trooper Laxton, Garvin County Trooper Doug George, the Stratford Police Department, the Lighthorse Police, Stratford Fire Department and the Garvin County Sheriff’s Office.
