ADA — A stolen 1974 Mercedes Benz 230 was recovered after it was found abandoned near County Road 1720 on State Highway 99 south of Fittstown Friday. A friend of the vehicle’s owner spotted it on his way to work.

Jonathan Michael Griffin, 21, Ada, was later charged with suspicion of attempted grand larceny, obstructing an officer and a warrant for knowingly concealing stolen property.

A witness near the site of the recovered vehicle told officers he saw a white male wearing a dark shirt, blue jeans and a ball cap open the hood of the car and trunk and look through the car. He later walked off from the car and headed north on SH 19 toward Fittstown, according to the Pontotoc County Sheriff’s report filed by Deputy Brian Engel.

Another witness told deputies he too had seen a man of the same description walking near the stolen car try to get a ride from passing cars.

According to the report, the suspect said he looked through the vehicle and was planning to steal it and drive it back to Ada because he did not want to walk. He told deputies he did not steal the vehicle from Ada or know who did.
