OKLAHOMA CITY — Amanda Cockrill, Stonewall, was recently selected as November Athlete of the Month and honored by the Oklahoma Lottery Commission, Special Olympics Oklahoma and Cox Communications.

“The Special Olympics athletes are wonderful individuals that the Oklahoma Lottery is very proud to spotlight,” said Beverly Hughes, Oklahoma Lottery director of sales and marketing. “We wanted to recognize the great achievements these athletes have made. They are truly an inspiration,” Hughes said.

Cockrill has been an active participant in Special Olympics Oklahoma for seven years. Her coach describes her as a very dedicated athlete who never misses practice.

“Special Olympics is fun because we have a team," Cockrill said. "I get a chance to bring home a gold medal, and I like to spend time with my friends."

In her spare time, Cockrill is active on the Byng Pirate team and she’s also involved in her church youth group.

The Athlete of the Month program runs every month through May 2007 with a new athlete selected each month. The individual athletes are chosen by Special Olympics Oklahoma.

Each Athlete of the Month receives a prize pack which includes a framed certificate, personalized jacket, DVD of the television spot featuring them (which runs throughout the month on Cox Cable) and a $100 gift card from Papa John’s.
