ADA — For some parents, returning to school can be an incredible financial hardship; but still their kids need to be ready for school. To provide help and supplies for children, the 2010 Back to School Basics project has scheduled “Stuff the Bus Week” from July 19 through July 22 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Wal-Mart and Staples. Volunteers will accept donations of cash or school supplies from shoppers at each location.
Back to School Basics has served families throughout Pontotoc County for 19 years. The project’s mission is to ensure that each child starts the new school year with the confidence that s/he is prepared with the materials needed to complete school assignments. The program is a service project of the Ada Sunrise Rotary Club and the Ada Salvation Army. The Sunrise Rotary Club hosts the Fireball Classic 10K-5K run and 5K walk on the 4th of July and contributes most of their proceeds toward the purchase of backpacks. Supplies to fill the backpacks are purchased with funds raised through numerous activities & donations from individuals, churches, businesses, and civic organizations. The Salvation ArmyLadies Auxiliary provides gift cards toward the purchase of new school shoes for the children. Additional gift cards will be provided through funds generated by a Poker Run coordinated by Candy Weddle and the American Legion Post 72.
Volunteers are needed to help with several stages of the project, from working with “Stuff the Bus” to wrapping the supply packets to helping distribute supplies and backpacks to the various schools. Jennifer Snell and Kimberly Miller, teachers with the Stonewall Schools, and Suzanne McFarlane, director of the Back to School Basics Project, are coordinating the volunteer work schedules.
