ADA—Pontotoc County Relay for Life kicked off the relay season with the first committee meeting on Wednesday.

“We’re all really excited to get out there and break some records,” Dawn Horton, event chair, said.  “We hope to raise a lot of money for the American Cancer Society.”

Money raised by the annual Relay for Life goes to the American Cancer Society.

Horton said the theme of this year’s event will be “celebrations.”  She said team themes can vary from Christmas to birthdays or New Years celebrations and can even include celebrations of sports teams.  While discussing this event’s theme, a few committee members burst into an impromptu performance of Kool and the Gang’s “Celebration.”

Among items discussed for this year’s event were themed laps, a possible giveaway between 3 and 6 a.m. and a hospitality tent for cancer survivors.  Horton said she felt it was important that cancer survivors feel comfortable and cared for at the Relay for Life fund raiser.

She said another of her goals is to make teams feel appreciated.

“We want teams to know that whether they raise $100 or $1,000, their time and contributions are important to us,” she said.

Horton also said a solicitation is being sent around for a “2010 Annual Fund Ada Drive” and money donated to it will go to the American Cancer Society, but will not count toward Pontotoc County Relay for Life’s local relay.

Contributions to the American Cancer Society help to fund research, education, advocacy and cancer patient services.  All programs and services offered by the American Cancer Society are free of charge because of these contributions.
