Retired Educators

ADA — The Pontotoc County Retired Educators met at the Elk’s Lodge Sept. 15. Dr. Charles Barrick, president, welcomed everyone with 1906 anecdotes. Ruth Ann Taylor gave the invocation. Barrick introduced superintendent of Byng Schools, Steven Crawford, as guest speaker.

Crawford spoke on “What’s going on” using three topics. First, his beginning from a humble household through high school and college years, then on to his teaching, administrative positions, state and national posts including being a member of the National Board of Superintendents in Washington D.C. Second, the advances in education and the Byng system, the older idea of Universal Access (all must attend) in now Universal Proficiency (no child left behind). With excellent teachers he felt that schools, including Byng, are doing a good job. Third, educators are still being over worked and under paid. Retired and active teachers must work together to get the salary and retirement benefits changed.

A business session was held with the minutes of the April 22 meeting approved. Dr. Roy Watson presented the treasure’s report which was approved. Lorene Hughes gave a benevolence report. Edna Mae Cooley requested volunteers for the 6th grade math program at Willard School. Cooley also gave a report on the 2006-2007, PCREA Year Book.
