The Jolly Elders met for breakfast Nov. 2 at J.D.’s Cafe. Meeting was called to order with a prayer offered by James Abbott. The birthday celebrated for the month was Herbert Brinlee. Those attending were James and Birdie Abbott, Elzie Priest, Lee and Simmie Swanson, Mattie Hunley, Marietta Walden, Chris Kerr, Clive and Betty Rigsby, Lois Roper, Floyd Wilkins, Haskell and Barbara Harrison and Bill and Wanda Osborn.
The group met Nov. 16 at J.D.’s Cafe and prayer was offered by Lee W. Swanson. The Jolly Elders met for Fun Night at the church Fellowship Hall Nov. 9. Those attending were James and Birdie Abbott, Haskell and Barbara Harrison, Lee and Simmie Swanson, Novie and Von Dedmon, Bill and Wanda Osborn, Mattie Hunley, Marietta Walden, Yvonne Hatcher, Clive and Betty Rigsby, Lois Roper, Floyd Wilkins, Wayne and Mary Cooper, Betty King, Elbern and Dean Cooper, Phyllis Agee and Marvin and Barbara Byers.
Preceptor Delta Phi
Preceptor Delta Phi social for December was its Christmas Party with Husbands held at the Elks Lodge Dec. 1.
Everyone was in attendance except President Juanita Sutton and her husband Edd. She was recovering from minor surgery and was missed.
Food was ordered individually from the menu or buffet.
Poinsettias were the table centerpieces and at the end of the evening guests drew for the plants. Lucille Collins, Annette Rhoads and Nina Davis all won a plant. As members were leaving, each couple had their photos taken by the Elks Christmas tree. The pictures will appear in the yearly scrapbook.
The next regular meeting for January will be Jan. 5 at Sally Spence’s with Nina Davis serving refreshments.
Rebecca Sunday School
The Rebecca Sunday School Class of Oak Avenue Baptist Church met Tuesday, Dec. 12, at the Aldridge Coffee Shop for its regular monthly meeting. Opening prayer was lead by Phyllis Phillips.
Ann Cass, class president, was in charge. A report on November attendance was given, and Donna Patton gave the financial report.
Phyllis Phillips read the story of a blind shepherd who was lead to the stable were Jesus was born. He was allowed to hold the tiny baby and through his faith had his eyesight restored. Members in the class who are ill or homebound were remembered in prayer.
Door prizes were won by Donna Patton and Oneita Loyd. Closing prayer was given by Ann Cass. Those attending were Ann Cass, Donna Patton, Verna Gash, Oneita Loyd, Flora Sawyers, Phyllis Phillips and guest Edna Cooper.
Spark of Oak
Spark of Oak, the senior adults of Oak Avenue Baptist Church, met Tuesday, Dec. 12, fror their monthly meeting and Christmas party. The tables were covered with white tablecloths and centered with poinsettias. Opening prayer was given by Rev. Ray Talbott. Bill Timothy was in charge of the program that followed dinner.
The Christmas Story was given by Floyd Holman assisted by Ann Holman. A selection of Christmas songs was sung by Jeri Bradley, accompanied by David Bradley on the piano. She also led the members in singing “Silent Night.”
A drawing for door prizes was held by Phyllis Phillips. Those winning were Celena Galbreaith, Bill Timothy, Tawana Black, Floyd Holman, Verna Gash, Dorothy Brendle, Ann Holman, Cleo Timothy, Ray Talbott, Ginger Stanfield, David Bradley, Hobert Robinson and Jeri Bradley. In lieu of a gift exchange, the members made a donation to the local police D.A.R.E. program. Phyllis Phillips reported on the Children’s Christmas Store which was held Saturday. It was very successful with more than 60 children selecting gifts for family and friends. The coat give-a-way was also well attended.
