OLNEY — Residents of Olney School District have voted against moving the small community school to the Tupelo School District by a 90 to 61 vote.

“I think the people have spoken,” Jerry Romines, superintendent of Olney Schools said. “We have always planned on having school next year and that’s what we’re going to do.”

While this is the first time community members have voted on this particular issue, Romines indicated he was not sure whether the vote would come up in the future.

“I could not make a comment about whether they're voting again or not,” he said. “That's the board’s decision.”

Currently, Olney has 79 students enrolled in its schools, from pre-kindergarden to 12th grade.

Olney is located approximately 12 miles southeast of Tupelo.
