McALESTER — A McAlester businessman was sentenced Thursday for defrauding the government, according to federal authorities.

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma released a report which said Thomas A. Hunt, 37, owner of AB Medical, Inc., was sentenced to serve two years in federal prison for “knowingly and willfully executing a scheme to defraud a healthcare benefit program by causing the Oklahoma Medicaid program to pay AB Medical, Inc., for durable medical equipment when the equipment was not medically necessary nor delivered to the Medicaid recipients,” the report said.

Assistant United States Attorney Ryan Roberts calculated the loss at $613,657. He said the fraud occurred from September 2007 to September 2008.

Hunt must also serve three years of probation and was ordered to report to the Bureau of Prisons Jan. 18, 2011.

Roberts said charges arose from an investigation by the Oklahoma Health Care Authority, the Oklahoma Office of the Attorney General and Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigations Division.
