A man was arrested last week for allegedly impersonating a police officer and performing at least one traffic stop in Ada.
Pontotoc County Sheriff John Christian said Gary Childers, 55, Ada, was arrested July 22 after receiving information Childers had performed an illegal traffic stop.
In a report filed by Deputy Chris Bittle, a woman reported being pulled over by Childers.
“On July 17, I received a call from Kala Cox who said she was driving south on Stadium near East Central University campus when a vehicle approached from behind with red and blue lights flashing,” Bittle said.
“Kala said she pulled over at the intersection of 10th and Stadium because she thought the vehicle was a police car.”
Bittle said Childers owns a former police car (2004 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor) complete with heavy duty alternating flashing police emergency lights which he said he used for storm chasing purposes.
Cox said the man put his window down and told her she needed to slow down, Bittle said. Cox said she knew the man was not a police officer and drove away.
“Kala said she drove off and the vehicle got behind her with lights flashing again,” Bittle said.
“She said the driver of the vehicle again rolled down his window and said, ‘I told you to slow down. I’m trying to keep you from getting a ticket.’”
Christian is asking for anyone who may have been pulled over by Childers to phone the sheriff’s office at 332-4169 and provide information.
