ADA – Robert Lee Bailey, 20, Ada, appeared in Pontotoc County Court Monday to enter a plea of no contest to the charge of animal cruelty for the killing of a poodle in January.

District Judge Thomas Landrith reviewed an evaluation of Bailey’s ability to understand the charges against him, his ability to consult with his lawyer in his defense as well as whether he would be a danger to society if released. Landrith sped up the judicial process by allowing Bailey to waive his right to a preliminary hearing and accepting a confession to the charge. Landrith sentenced Bailey to five years deferred with credit for 100 days already served, along with several conditions he must adhere to.

Bailey was ordered to live under the supervision of his grandfather, Junior Bailey, at his residence in Nevada for the next five years and regularly meet with a probation officer. He must stay on his medications, continue with mental health counseling and be subjected to random urinalysis tests. If he is suspected of drug or alcohol abuse, he will be required to attend rehabilitation. Bailey was ordered to pay court costs.
