ADA — Longtime optician and businessman Kenneth Hensley, 95, Ada, died Friday at a local nursing home.

He owned and operated Oklahoma Optical in Ada from 1945 until 1972, when his son-in-law Floyd Gurley took over the business. Mr. Hensley began his career as an apprentice at American Optical in Muskogee and later managed the company’s Oklahoma City office. He would later own three optical companies in Ardmore, Ada and Denton, Texas.

During World War II, Mr. Hensley provided glasses to the U.S. Navy at Corpus Christi, Texas, and trained naval observers with techniques to identify enemy planes.

He was a lay minister and taught Sunday school for more than 40 years. After his retirement, he visited 27 countries as a missionary and established an interdenominational worship service at Twin Palms, near McAllen, Texas.
