ADA — A head-on collision northwest of Ada Friday left two dead at the scene and four others fighting for their lives.

Christy Harjo, 26, Ada, and Damien Lawrence, 6, Midwest City, were pronounced dead at the scene by State Medical Examiner John Moody.

The two vehicle accident occurred on State Highway 3W near County Road 3450 just after 7:30 p.m. A report by Oklahoma Highway Patrol Troopers said a 1999 Mercury Cougar driven by Hollie Bowyer, 27, Del City, went left of center and hit a 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo head on. The Monte Carlo was driven by Frankie Harjo, 35, Ada. Christy Harjo, Hannah Harjo, 14, Ada, and Nokosi Harjo age 9 weeks, Ada, were passengers in Harjo’s vehicle, the report said.

Sam Nelson, who lives just off SH 3W on CR 3450, heard the accident and witnessed the aftermath.

“I was out front working on my truck when it happened,” Nelson said. “It sounded like a bomb exploded.”

Frankie Harjo was taken by Eagle Med helicopter to Texoma Medical Center in Denison, Texas and admitted in critical condition with head, trunk and leg injuries. Christy Harjo died at the scene. Hannah Harjo was taken by Eagle Med helicopter to Texoma Medical Center in Denison, Texas and admitted in critical condition with head and internal injuries. Nokosi Harjo was taken to Valley View Regional Hospital and later taken by ambulance to Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City, and according to hospital officials, remains in serious condition. All passengers in Harjo’s vehicle were pinned for 45 minutes before Ada firefighters freed them by removing the roof of the Chevrolet with a hydraulic cutting tool. Ada firefighters set up a triage area and landing zone for the helicopters. EMS paramedics stabilized the victims and prepared them for transport.

Bowyer was pinned inside her vehicle for 45 minutes. Ada firefighters freed her by removing the roof of the Mercury. She was taken by Eagle Med helicopter to Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas and admitted in critical condition with head, internal and leg injuries. A passenger in Bowyer’s vehicle, 6-year-old Damien Lawrence, died at the scene. Christy Harjo and Damien Lawrence were taken to Criswell Funeral Home.

The report said seatbelts were in use by all except Lawrence. Firefighters from Oil Center, Ada and Pickett, Pontotoc County sheriff’s deputies, Chickasaw Nation Lighthorse police and troopers from the Oklahoma Highway patrol responded to the scene.
