Ada—Ada will soon see the end of another era with the closing of Mary Lou’s Sun and Fun, 101 S. Broadway. The exclusive lady’s dress shop has operated in Ada for more than 47 years.

A reception is scheduled today from 2-4 p.m. at the Ada Arts and Heritage as a celebration of business honoring Mary Lou Bass, owner of Mary Lou’s Sun and Fun. According to Sally Bennett, friend and customer of Bass, the event is designed to give friends and former Sun and Fun customers an opportunity to visit with Bass before the closing of her store.

“I have been a customer of Sun and Fun for more than 47 years,” said Bennett. “I depended on Mary Lou to shop for me. Now, I am going to have to learn to shop.”

Before moving to its current location, Sun and Fun was located at 1201 Arlington. When Arlington was widened to a four-lane many years ago, the street was closed. However, according to Bennett that didn’t stop Bass’s loyal customers. They found a way around the closed street to shop at Sun and Fun.

At that time, Bennett said Bass faced “terrific competition” downtown. Other women’s dress shops included Fields, Miss Lowery’s, The Accessory Shop, Miss Stevens and The Smart Shop. Department stores in Ada carrying fine women’s clothing included Gluckmans, Dillons and Katz. None of these businesses have survived the passage of time and lessening demand for specialty shops.
