COALGATE — Oklahoma wildlife will be the topic of the Coal County Public Library 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, as the 2006 Summer Reading Program “Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales” continues.

Steve Burge from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife will be telling about wildlife in the area and the conservation of the wildlife of Oklahoma and beyond. The Summer Reading Program is open to children ages 5 - 12 years.

Plans are under way for another big Fourth of July celebration sponsored by the Coal County Chamber of Commerce and the city of Coalgate.

The celebration will begin July 3 with a street dance from 9 p.m. to midnight. Sponsored by Shamrock Bank, the dance will feature a live band and soft drinks in the bank parking lot. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy the festivities.

Following is a tentative schedule of Independence Day activities:

11 a.m. — downtown parade under the theme “World War II Remembered.” Lineup begins at the school gymnasium at 10 a.m. Entry forms are available at the OSU Extension Office, Shamrock Bank and FirstBank and need to be turned in at the lineup.

Afternoon activities take place at the Coalgate Park beginning at noon.

12 p.m. — lunch served by the OHCE ladies at the Park Community Building. Five dollars for a barbecue sandwich, chips, drink and desert.

1 p.m. - 2:45 p.m. — local performers at the bandstand (musicians, dancers, etc.).

3 p.m. — political speaking.

5 p.m. — Caney Cowboys country music concert.

7 p.m. — Cast Iron Blue Grass Band.

9:45 p.m. — fireworks display.

The new Coalgate swimming pool is expected to be open by July 4, and a dedication ceremony is being planned for new workout stations that are to be installed along the park jogging trail. These are made possible by a $5,000 grant awarded to the Atoka/Coal Partnership for Change Turning Point Coalition for exercise equipment for Coalgate and Atoka.

The Coalgate Park will be a great place to bring the family and spend the 4th — there will be activities for all ages!

Contact the OSU Extension Center, Shamrock Bank or FirstBank to enter a float or participate as a performer or volunteer.
