ADA — Four persons were hospitalized after a head-on collision Thursday in Pontotoc County northwest of Ada near Oil Center, according to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol report.

Troopers said 79-year-old Janice Clifford of Atoka was driving a 2005 Buick west on State Highway 3W about 13 miles northwest of Ada at about 8 a.m. when she swerved left of center to avoid objects in the roadway and struck a 2005 Mazda headed east head-on driven by 69-year-old Charles Sheppard of Norman.

The patrol said Clifford was transported by Valley View Emergency Medical Services to Valley View Regional Hospital in Ada, where she was treated and admitted in critical condition with internal and leg injuries. A passenger in Clifford’s vehicle, 74-year-old Betty McNutt of Atoka, was hospitalized in fair condition with internal injuries.

Sheppard and his passenger, 59-year-old Della Sheppard of Norman, were also admitted to VVRH in critical condition with internal trunk injuries, according to the OHP report.

Each of the victims was wearing a seat belt and airbags were deployed in both vehicles, the patrol said.

OHP was assisted by Pontotoc County Sheriff’s deputies and Ada and Oil Center firefighters.
