ADA — Dr. Fionnuala Gurley, from Belfast, Northern Ireland, was awarded the prestigious Marinelli Award this past month. The award is awarded to one physician throughout the entire internal medicine programs at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Gurley was nominated by Guy Reeder, M.D., the program director of the Cardiology Fellowship Program at the clinic and was presented the Marinelli Award at the Internal Medicine Awards Banquet on May 17.

Mayo benefactors, Angela and Anne Marinelli, established this endowed fellowship in Medicine through the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education. Gurley’s department of cardiology will be awarded $15,000 in honor of her achievement.  To be considered for this award the physician must provide the highest level of compassionate care for both simple and complex problems; demonstrate professionalism during interactions with patients and all members of the healthcare team; and be respected by supervising physicians and peers for excellent clinical judgment.

Gurley, a cardiology fellow at the Mayo Clinic, was previously employed by the Valley View Regional Hospital pharmacy. She then moved to be a pharmacist in Northern Ireland before attending medical school at the University of Oklahoma. She completed her internal medicine residency at the Mayo Clinic in 2002 and will complete her cardiology fellowship in 2007. She specializes in cardiac imaging.

Gurley is married to Russ Gurley, an author and publisher from Ada and has two daughters, Cait, 4, and Caoimhe, 7 months old.

Gurley and her family will be returning to Ada in the summer of 2007 when she will join the medical staff at Valley View Regional Hospital.
