ADA—First Night Ada is ready to ring in the new year Monday night. The family oriented celebration has been in the plans since June.

The alcohol-free celebration is designed to promote the appreciation of the arts and is taking place on East Central University’s campus. Many entertainers are preparing for the first night of the new tradition. One highlight of the event is the Elvis look-alike and sing-alike contest. Overall Chairman of First Night Ada Tommye Rafes said the winner of the contests will be the opening act for the finale performance with Elvis impersonator Kraig Parker. She said there are still spots available for the competitions and hopefuls may register for the competition up to the last minute at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

The finale is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. with fireworks at midnight.

In the meantime, Rafes and Jae L. Stilwell have been in almost constant contact working out the last of the “kinks,” Rafes said.

“Everything is pretty much set in place,” Stilwell said. “I think it’s going to be a really fun night. We have a little bit of everything for everyone.”

Rafes said there were over 20 members of the community volunteering time to make First Night Ada a success. She said the volunteers included a varity of people including layers, administrators and managers.

“It’s a community effort,” Rafes said. Rafes believes the First Night will be a safe, fun and very eventful night for the community.

Thursday night was the last official meeting for the First Night volunteers. Rafes said the meeting began at 3:30 p.m. and lasted past 7 p.m. Monday morning at 10 a.m., several groups will be preparing the ECU campus for the community event. Rafes said school groups, a boy scout group and many others will be setting stuff up.

Rafes advised if volunteers or performers have not picked up the buttons for the event, they may do so at the button table in ECU’s University Center. The buttons will be sold at the University Center, Dorothy Summers Theatre and Kerr Center for $15. Since the event is non-profit, the monies will go towards paying for entertainment and equipment.

Some changes were made to the schedule of events, Rafes said. However, the updated schedules will be available at the button tables for First Nighters.
