ADA — Energis LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Holcim (US) Inc., has purchased the former Able Tire Processing facility in Ada.

Energis is a provider of waste co-processing services and is responsible for sourcing and procuring alternative fuels and raw materials, according to Holcim spokesperson Sharon Myers. It pre-processes waste streams into the form, consistency and uniformity required by Holcim (US) cement kiln systems and sells co-processing services.

The former Able Tire Processing facility has been in operation since 2002, and since that time has provided tires to Holcim for use as alternative fuel in its cement manufacturing process.

The operation of the tire processing facility is regulated by the Oklahoma Waste Tire Recycling Act, under the jurisdiction of Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality and Oklahoma Tax Commission. The act includes a provision for the collection of waste tires in all 77 Oklahoma counties. The waste tires are used as an alternative fuel by manufacturing industries, which reduces the dependence on natural resources such as coal or oil.

The Holcim cement manufacturing plant in Ada uses more than two million tires per year as alternative fuel, Myers said. Energis sources the waste tires through several contracted transporters who collect tires throughout the state. When the waste tires arrive at the Energis site adjacent to the Ada plant, there are five full time employees to manage and process the tires.

The Energis tire processing facility is managed by Ada resident Jimmy Bennett. Bennett has worked at the Holcim Ada Plant since 1984 as a kiln operator and production supervisor.

“We are very fortunate to have Jimmy managing the tire processing facility,” said Holcim Plant Manager Christine Bragge. “He brings a lot of practical experience to the job. His knowledge of the kilns and the manufacturing process greatly enhance our ability to take advantage of alternative fuels.”

To mark the tire facility joining Energis and the celebration of Earth Day Friday, April 21, 2006, Energis and Holcim are sponsoring a tire collection day, at the Pontotoc County Agri-plex from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Area residents are invited to bring used passenger car tires to the collection site for disposal at no charge, according to Myers. Tractor tires, large off-road tires and equipment tires and tires from dealers and commercial businesses can not be accepted during this collection event.
