Seniors Kathryn Wellington of Vanoss High School and Kara Byers of Byng High School have been selected as the first recipients of the Student of the Month honor sponsored by East Central University and People's Electric Cooperative.

Each received a $250 one-time academic tuition waiver from ECU and a $50 Staples gift card courtesy of PEC. The award is based on leadership, community service and academic achievement.

Wellington, a 4.0 GPA student, was the recipient for October. She is in Vanoss' first leadership class. She has participated in toy and blood drives and relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina. She is active in her youth group and has been on many mission trips around the United States.

Byers, the ECU/PEC Student of the Month for November, has a 3.6 GPA. She has participated in community service, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, horticulture and varsity softball and basketball. She works part-time at Homer Elementary School.
