STONEWALL—Stonewall City Council recently enacted an earlier curfew for children 15 and under, Jason Teel of the Stonewall Police Department said.

“We’ve always had a curfew for children 15 and under,” Teel said.  “It’s always been 10 p.m. throughout the week and midnight on weekends.”

Teel said the earlier curfew is in response to increased vandalism and theft in the area.

“We’ve been having a lot of juvenile problems lately with vandalisms, thefts and things like that so the council enacted the emergency curfew.  It starts at 8 p.m. now,” he said.  He said the curfew will last until the end of the school year.  The curfew will be strictly enforced by giving citations to the violaters’ parents, Teel said.

“Whenever we catch juveniles out, we’ll be picking them up, bringing them to city hall and calling their parents,” he said.  The citation will mean a $50 fine.

“We’ve got some parents around here that don’t really care where their kids are or what they’re doing,” he said.  “We have to extend the curfew to get control of things and get the parents liable and accountable for their children’s actions.”

Teel said children 15 years old and younger can still be at sporting events and other social functions but must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to be anywhere else.

“They can’t be walking the streets after 8 p.m. or they will be picked up,” he said.
