A benefit concert for the New Horizons Workshop is set for this weekend.
The concert with the Mingo Valley Boys, featuring country musicians Morey Sullivan and J.D. Walters, will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday at Pontotoc County Agri-plex Auditorium, 1701 N. Broadway. Adult tickets for patrons 13 and older are $10 in advance or $15 at the door, and tickets for children ages 6 through 12 are $5.
Family tickets, which will admit up to 5 people, are $30 each and must be purchased in advance. Kids younger than 6 will be admitted free.
Sullivan is a bass player and singer who acted as bandleader for musician Hank Thompson’s band, the Brazos Valley Boys, for 25 years, according to information supplied by New Horizons. Sullivan has been inducted into western swing halls of fame in Seattle; Sacramento, Calif.; Kansas; and Oklahoma.
Walters is a steel guitarist who toured with musician Freddy Hart for seven years during the peak of Hart’s popularity, according to New Horizons. Walters also toured for three years with musician Billie Jo Spears, who was the top country artist in Europe at the time.
Walters has been inducted into the Southwest, Kansas and West Coast western swing halls of fame. Other members of the Mingo Valley Boys are Jeff Pickle, lead guitar and vocals; Mike Smith, fiddle and vocals; Doug Scott, fiddle and electric mandolin; and Jim Wolfe, drums.
Proceeds from the fundraiser will help cover operating costs for New Horizons, a local nonprofit agency that provides job training for disabled people.
